Learning Support

Support for Children with Learning Difficulties

At BrainboxCCD, every child we work with has a different way of learning, and our approach is individualized to fit each one. We begin by assessing each child using our structured assessment methods to identify where their learning difficulties or weaknesses lie, and from there we develop a tailored program designed to target those specific areas.

From Dyslexia and ADHD to language processing difficulties and developmental delays, we draw on a range of structured, evidence based programs including the Orton-Gillingham program, Cognitive Development, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Handwriting Without Tears, and individualized one-to-one academic support. Each program is selected based on what will make the most difference for that child, in the classroom and in everyday life.

Our program for children with dyslexia takes a dual approach, addressing both the literacy and cognitive foundations that underpin reading and language learning.

We begin by assessing each student’s current reading level and identifying specific areas of difficulty, such as phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension, or vocabulary. Based on this assessment, we implement tailored strategies that cater to their unique needs, incorporating engaging, evidence-based techniques that build essential skills while fostering a love for reading. This includes interactive reading sessions where students can practice decoding and comprehension in a supportive environment, alongside specialized resources and activities that promote vocabulary expansion and critical thinking.

On the literacy side, we use the Orton-Gillingham program, a multisensory, structured literacy approach that targets reading, spelling, and decoding. It is individualized and sequential, meaning each child moves through the program at their own pace based on their specific needs and progress.

Alongside this, we incorporate BrainRx, a cognitive development program that targets the underlying cognitive skills that children with dyslexia often struggle with, including auditory processing, working memory, processing speed, and attention. By strengthening these foundational skills, BrainRx works in parallel with the Orton-Gillingham program to give each child a more complete and lasting foundation for reading and learning.

Our writing program supports children who struggle with the physical and cognitive demands of written expression. We begin by assessing each child to identify where they are in relation to their school’s curriculum expectations, and from there we develop a specialized IEP that targets the foundational skills needed to meet those expectations. Our one-to-one sessions are built around the child’s individual program, ensuring that every skill we work on is purposeful and directly connected to what is expected of them in the classroom.

For children who struggle with the physical act of writing, we use the Handwriting Without Tears program, a multisensory approach that supports letter formation, spacing, and fine motor development. The program uses a range of hands-on tools and techniques to make handwriting more accessible and less frustrating for children who find it challenging.

Where a child’s writing difficulties are linked to occupational therapy or sensory needs, we work closely with our trusted partner network to ensure those areas are addressed alongside our academic program. Rather than working in isolation, we take a joined-up approach to make sure every aspect of the child’s development is being supported in the right way.

Children with dyscalculia experience genuine difficulty understanding numbers, quantities, and mathematical concepts, even with adequate instruction. This often presents as challenges with number sense, arithmetic, and applying maths in real everyday contexts, and can have a significant impact on numeracy, word problems, maths reasoning, and performance in quantitative subjects at school.

Our approach to supporting children with dyscalculia combines three core methods. Through Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), we break mathematical concepts down into small, structured, and measurable steps, using consistent reinforcement to build confidence and fluency over time. Alongside this, our cognitive development program targets the underlying processing skills that mathematics depends on, including working memory, reasoning, and processing speed, strengthening the foundations that make mathematical thinking possible.

All of this is delivered through individualized one-to-one sessions built around a specialized IEP, ensuring that the skills we are working on are directly tied to the child’s curriculum expectations at school. We assess each child to identify exactly where the gaps are and work systematically toward closing them at a pace that suits the child.

Our Unique Approach to Learning Support

Behavioral Approach

Our ABA program focuses on breaking down skills and concepts into small, structured, and measurable steps, making learning more accessible for children who need a clear and consistent approach. It uses reinforcement-based strategies to build new skills, reduce barriers to learning, and increase independence. For children with learning difficulties, ABA provides a reliable framework that creates steady, trackable progress across academic and developmental goals.

Cognitive Approach

Our cognitive development program focuses on strengthening the underlying thinking skills that learning depends on. Rather than targeting academic content directly, it works on building the processing foundations that make learning possible, such as working memory, attention, processing speed, and reasoning. For children with learning difficulties, these are often the areas where support is needed most, and strengthening them creates a more solid base for everything we work on academically.

Specialist Learning Programs

Designed for children with specific learning difficulties including dyslexia, dyscalculia, and handwriting challenges. All sessions are delivered one-to-one, allowing us to use structured, evidence-based methods such as the Orton-Gillingham approach and Handwriting Without Tears in a way that is fully individualized to each child’s needs, pace, and learning profile. Every program begins with an assessment so that the support we provide is always targeted, purposeful, and directly relevant to that child.
